Assessment of TRMM rainfall data for flood modelling in three contrasting catchments in Java, Indonesia

Abstract This study investigates the use of Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission's (TRMM) rainfall data for predicting water flows and flood events in three catchments on island Java, Indonesia, namely, Ciliwung, Citarum Bengawan Solo. The Shetran model was used rainfall-runoff simulations, with input obtained from measured rain gauges (hourly daily) TRMM (3-hourly daily). daily Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) values calibration period were 0.75, 0.70 0.85 using gauge 0.44, 0.44 0.75 data. For validation period, NSE 0.71, 0.62 0.89 0.26, 0.61 0.58 Critical Success Index flooding improved compared to results demonstrate that are systematically superior when simulating discharges events. These findings suggest preferred early warning systems tropical regimes if or similar satellite used, evaluated risks should be treated extreme caution.
